Language and Religion

Bhutan is a Buddhist country. The Drukpa Kagyu and the Nyingma strand of Vajrayana Buddhism is widely followed.

Every aspect of the Bhutanese is influenced by religion. There is a monastery on almost every mountain ridge and thousands of colourful prayer flags and stupas on every mountain pass, prayer wheels and prayers carved on stones. The Buddha, Guru Padmasambhava and numerous tantric deities are worshipped in many forms.

Rituals are performed on all important occasions such as birth, death, marriage, official functions, household ceremonies, departure on a trip or when unwell after consulting lamas. Bhutanese language and literature, arts and crafts, drama, music, ceremonies and events, architecture, and basic social and cultural values draw their essence from Buddhist values.

National and regional festivities, coinciding with seasons, are major events for the entire population the year round. The Buddhist world, thus, regards the kingdom with special importance as the last bastion of Mahayana Buddhism.

Dzongkha is the official language of Bhutan. English is widely spoken in the country.
